Paper Call: Modern Language Association, San Francisco, December 27-30, 1991, sponsored by the Children's Literature Association (an allied organization). Session Topic: Children's Literature and the Golden West

Connections between books for children and the Golden West are various: the Hispanic-Native American roots of the West; the West Coast, gate for the peoples of the Orient; juvenile adventure stories about prospecting for gold; and the "Go west, young man" theme. Papers may examine these or similar topics.

Papers should not exceed 8-10 pages (picas with one-inch margins), should take no more than 15-20 minutes to read, and should follow the MLA style manual. Inquiries are welcome, but only completed papers will be considered for inclusion in the session. Program participants in fields related to language and literature must be members of the Modern Language Association by April 1, 1991. Deadline for completed papers is March 6, 1991. Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association

The 1991 conference of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association will be held in San Antonio, Texas, March 27-30. The Children's Culture Caucus of the PCA invites presentations on any aspect of children's popular culture: literature, media, material culture. Papers are sought on the following topics in particular: comic books, science fiction, folktales and folklore, and children's heroes.

PCA encourages interdisciplinary approaches and the use of visual media in its presentations, which should be 15-20 minutes long. The deadline for a submission of a paper or a 200 word abstract is September 1, 1990. Please include a brief abstract of the paper on the title page.
