The International Conference on “Cultural Studies: China and the West” was held at Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Dalian, China, August 5–10, 1995. The conference was sponsored by Peking University, the University of Virginia, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, the Institute of Foreign Literatures, the Research Institute for Postmodern Studies, and the Association for Sino-American Comparative Culture Studies.

Versions of the essays published in this issue, with the exception of the two commentaries, were originally read at the conference. The commentaries, prepared especially for this issue, were written by Jonathan Arac who attended the conference and by Ray Chow who did not. The selection of the essays was made by the conference Academic Committee and their publication was supervised by New Literary History.
