Even as the ideological quarrels of the twentieth century fade away, critical discourse continues to pit partisans of mimesis against devotees of literary form. Challenging this dichotomy, this article explores the fascination with realism and representation among writers and theorists often considered to be formalists. It considers some narrative beginnings which thematize and enact the emergence of form from perception.
