Sarah Ellis examines how details of storytelling—metaphor, point of view and non-linear narrative, work to deepen and enrich two young adult novels, Permanent Rose by Hilary McKay and How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. In keeping with the conference theme of "particles of narrative," the analysis is constructed as a microscopic close up of the cellular structures of the novels.
