We are pleased to present the First and Second Prize winners of the Association for Middle East Women’s Studies’ First Graduate Student Essay Competition, which carry the award of being published in AMEWS’ official publication, the Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies. We are very gratified by the results of this competition, which was announced on May 1 and closed on June 30, 2007. During that brief window of opportunity, we received more than two dozen papers from graduate students in the U.S. and abroad. We wish to congratulate all of the contestants for their thoughtful submissions, and we thank the selection committee for their work in reading and assessing such a large field of entries. The selection was difficult, as the reviewers found the quality of the papers overall to be impressive, but the process was rewarding: “The next generation has a lot to say, and remains very dynamic.” The winning essays set a high standard for the new scholarship by the next generation of researchers on women and gender in the Middle East/North Africa and Muslim communities around the world. Indeed, the students of today are our colleagues of the future. We look forward to the next AMEWS Graduate Student Essay Competition. [End Page 29]
