To the editors:

In my article "The Origins of Holocaust Education in American Public Schools" (vol. 20, no. 1 [Spring 2006]) I refer briefly to Margot Stern Strom's parents. I describe Strom's mother, Fan Wener Stern, as a Sunday school teacher who "was very active in the local Christian community." The next sentence, referring back to Strom, begins with the words "Her father was Jewish."

The juxtaposition of these sentences seems to imply that Strom's mother was not Jewish. In fact she was; as her daughter puts it, she was, "deeply grounded in her strong belief in Judaism and its commitment to issues of social justice and tolerance." She taught Sunday school at Temple Israel in Memphis. As a teacher and community leader she met with local priests to exchange ideas about how to improve various aspects of communal life in the city.

I am grateful to Ms. Strom for calling my attention to this lack of clarity, and I sincerely regret any discomfort it has caused her or her family. [End Page 571]
