This textbook may be of some interest for those who embrace the re-branding of librarians as "information professionals," in that it addresses the whole life cycle of information without particular emphasis on the library or librarian. Chapters focus on the history of information and information technology, the cultural and social significance of information, the various information professions, and information ethics, power, and policy, among others. For those not intimidated by acronyms and technical writing, this book serves as a very detailed overview of metadata, with an explanation of the theories of metadata, the alphabet soup of various encoding standards, and explorations of some different implementations of those standards. Perhaps more practical is the final third of the book, which focuses on specific metadata projects in digital libraries, including a few brief case studies. (TJ)
