Passmore's book is particularly noteworthy for the way it traces the maze of crisscrossing influences between the numerous figures he discusses. It would be foolish to try to summarize the riches of Recent Philosophers. It would be even more foolish to try to criticize it in the limited space available. Indeed, if there is to be a history of contemporary Anglo-American thought, it will be built upon just such efforts to surpass Passmore's Herculean labors.
