BOOKS RECEIVED 507 succinctly,/s a fact of consciousness" (248). Dilthey does not mean by this that philosophy restricts itself to analyses of representational consciousness. On the contrary, his focus on the facts of consciousness is an attempt to recapture a prescientific experience of our volitional and emotional as well as cognitive relations to our world. The analyses of our perceptual relation to the external world and the temporal structure of the apprehension of our psychic lives which round out this book are articulations of the overarching I-World life-nexus unearthed in this first principle. The translation of Dilthey's often difficult German is masterful, and the introductory essay by Makkreel and Rodi provides a clear and insightful overview of the text. If there is any complaint to be made, it is the rather steep price of the cloth edition. A paperback edition would be welcomed by individual scholars and students. The systematic character of the Introduction is sure to effect a reappraisal of the philosophical importance of Dilthey's early work. Further, its detailed analysis of our lived experience of the world offers rich new points of comparison with Husserl and Heidegger. The Introduction is thus an important text for anyone interested in the development of phenomenology and hermeneutics. JAcoB OWrNSBV Jacksonville University BOOKS RECEIVED Alexander, Jeffrey C.
