BOOKS RECEIVED 687 tence debate: rather than being a "string of blunders committed by a monolithic movement of philosophic levellers" (9o5), the debate revealed fundamental philosophicad disagreement within the Vienna Circle. Between Carnap and Neurath, for example , Uebel identifies a fundamental difference of aim; Carnap sought to establish the poss//n'//ty of knowledge, while Neurath demanded the justification of actua/knowledge da/ms. Schlick, though sharing with Neurath a rejection of epistemological foundationalism , retained a semantic foundationalism that led to a conception of philosophy "unbridgeable" (937) with Neurath's. Unfortunately, Uebers project, highly worthwhile in principle and implementation , has been given an excessively expensive and overly modest home by Rodopi. $93.o0 buys a plain and not very durable paperback nearly swarming with typographical errors. Is it Neurath's destiny that his philosophical views be underappreciated, not only in the heyday of logical empiricism but in the course of its reassessment sixty years later? There is, and no doubt will be more (and more accessible), work on Neurath from other sources, but nevertheless the price and production values of this volume, as they stand presently, suggest that the answer is "yes."
