BOOKS RECEIVED 705 symbols mean and how they accrue value. Understood functionally, a linguistic symbol like "Black" generates group solidarity, for example. The use of Lewis here is a bit fast and loose--Washington cites a Lewis title reproduced in an anthology, which will put off readers and diminish Washington's own point.) On the whole, Washington's study remains somewhat uneven. He is clearly conversant with the various philosophical figures he discusses in relation to Locke, and he has an equally keen sense of nuance regarding Locke's own work. At the same time, his narrate-and-compare style of exposition is irksome: he sketches the outlines of an essay by Locke, then goes on to describe another philosopher's work (Bergson, Hegel, Lewis) in relation to the issues raised. As an expository technique its merits are questionable; now that Locke's primary writings are widely available, it is simply frustrating. Even putting aside the question of whether the particular figures Washington discusses sustain appropriate comparisons, the reader never quite feels that they have entered Locke's thought. The right approach, it seems, isjust to engage the arguments of the thinker in question, then see what they amount to. This is what a historian of philosophy should be doing. S. L.
