Inge Tvedten, a research fellow at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (Department of Social Science and Development) in Bergen, Norway, spent three years in Angola as a socioeconomic advisor to the ministry of fisheries, and has published extensively on the country. He was an observer during the 1992 Angolan elections, and is currently writing a study of Angola that will be published by Westview Press in a series on the nations of contemporary Africa.

1. The three seats set aside for representatives of Angolans living abroad have been temporarily dropped due to logistical difficulties, making the number of seats in parliament 220.
2. Its predecessor, UNAVEM I, was established in 1988 to supervise the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola, as part of the Namibian peace agreement.
