Correctly, the author of this unusually comprehensive and well-organized publication describes hers as a Sisyphean task. Her labors were initiated by the fine work of William L. Eisler (no relation of mine), The Impact of the Emperor Charles V on the Visual Arts (1983). Covering Northern Europe as well as Northern Italy and some Spanish issues, Ullrich concentrates on Italy, which needed far more work. Rome is the focal point of her part 1, Florence and Bologna of part 2, with Venice and related Terraferma, with long sections on Vicenza, Verona, and Bologna, comprising her part 3.

A bevy of lavishly illustrated, too heavy, and self-congratulatory exhibitions of Carlomania has emerged, on Charles V in Germany, Flanders, Italy, and Spain. Those interested in Cinquecento art and history pertaining to the emperor will value Ullrich's brilliantly comprehensive study not only for its fine text, but also for its clear reproduction of many unusual, neglected works.

Even though the author must deal with complex issues of theory and program, of religio-political maneuvers, her German is mercifully clear. Even Ullrich's introductory section, "Zur Methodik — Grundszatliche historische Determinanten" is exemplary for its precision.
