During his early to mid teens Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) composed a succession of concertos: for piano and string orchestra in A minor (1822); for violin and string orchestra in D minor (1822); for violin, piano, and string orchestra (later with wind parts added) in D minor (1823); and two concertos for two pianos and full orchestra in E and Ab major (1823 and 1824). His three mature concertos, for piano and orchestra in G minor, op. 25, and D minor, op. 40, and for violin and orchestra in E minor, op. 64, span the years 1831 to 1845. The editions under consideration here, therefore, comprise a significant part of Mendelssohn's concerto output. While the mature works were published during Mendelssohn's lifetime and enjoyed tremendous popularity, his youthful works remained in manuscript until the second half of the twentieth century. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there was little interest in studying, let alone performing these compositions; at that time Mendelssohn's reputation was at a low ebb and the number of his works in the concert repertoire had dwindled to a handful. In the aftermath of the Second World War, however, partly in reaction to the Nazi persecution not only of Jews, but also of Jewish art, there was a notable revival of interest in Mendelssohn and his works.
