Air

A humming gazefacing your being alone.

Sea breeze, the barely audiblehiss of the wave crestsor in a field a rustling lineof grass blades.

Or on the top of the mountainwhen at the end of the riseyou have passed the lastfingers of fir-trees,roots exposed between earth and sky.

On the cleared top,on the neat grey bareness of the rock,in the quiet alertnessof travelling shadows.

Where as a childyou whispered—I will and I won't—and wanted to makedefinitive vows, an unshakeablestream of promise.

Now you simply tryto say nothing, to let thoughtshiss away slowly, hearing only the moment—that has never changed. [End Page 42]

Aire

[End Page 43]
