It has come back, the air stungwith raw March short grassand the call of light from the strand,the lover's hair strewing again.It has brought its farscent of apple blossoms and new sand,the desert's miles mellowedby the beckoning swishing of palms.But it has broughta severe lingering too,strung in betweenthe swarming windows of birds,it has brought thoughtsin utter nakedness, one by onespangled on the strand's instantswith what you haven't yet done.A bright, long hole of dawnand hole of the unknown in your heart.And mothers' loom at the water's edge,the silver shuttles that rise and falland your time runningquietly short. Ha regresado, el aire laceradopor la hierba corta y tosca de marzoy la luz que llama desde la costa,el pelo del amante que se esparce una vez más.Ha traído consigo su perfume lejanode capullos de flores de manzano y de arena fresca,las millas de desierto suavizadaspor el llamado de las palmas que el viento hacen susurrar.Pero ha traído consigouna dilación severa también,estirada en mediode las ventanas pululando de pájaros,ha traído pensamientosen su desnudez absoluta, uno por unoestrellados en los instantes de la costacon lo que aún no has hecho.Un agujero de amanecer brillante y largoy un agujero de lo desconocido en tu corazón.Y el telar de madres al borde del agua,las lanzaderas plateadas que suben y bajany tu tiempo que se acabasilenciosamente. His work has been published in over one hundred literary magazines since 1999, in the U.K, U.S. and elsewhere, most recently in Poetry New Zealand and New Contrast (South Africa). He lives in Venice, Italy.
Mariana Past se desempeña como profesora de literatura caribeña en Dickinson College. Recibió su doctorado de Duke University, enfocándose en la literatura y la historia del caribe hispano y francés, publicando artículos en Journal of Haitian Studies, Del Caribe, y en la Revista de la Casa de las Américas.
Mariana Past is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Spanish at Dickinson College. She completed her graduate work in Romance Studies at Duke University, focusing on Spanish and French Caribbean literature and history. She has published articles in the Journal of Haitian Studies, Del Caribe, and the Revista de la Casa de las Américas.
