When I was young, the moon spoke in riddlesand the stars rhymed. I was a new toywaiting for my owner to pick me up.
When I was young, I ran the day to its knees.There were trees to swing on, crickets for capture.
I was narrowly sweet, infinitely cruel,tongued with honey and coddled in milk,sunburned and silvery and scabbed like a colt.

Cuando era joven la luna hablaba en acertijosy las estrellas rimaban. Yo era un juguete nuevoa la espera de que mi dueño me alzara.
Cuando era joven utilizaba el día al máximo.Había árboles de los cuales columpiarse, y grillos que capturar.
Yo era estrechamente dulce, infinitamente cruel,con una lengua de miel y mimada con leche,y con piel tostada por el sol y plateada, y llena de costras como si fuera un potro.

Rita Dove desde 1993 hasta 1995 fue destacada como Poeta Laureada de los Estados Unidos y Consultora de la biblioteca del congreso y como Poeta Laureada del estado de Virginia desde 2004 hasta 2006. Ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos literarios y académicos, entre ellos el Pulitzer Prize en 1987, y más recientemente, en 2003, el Emily Couric Leadership Award, en 2001 el Duke Ellington Lifetime Achievement Award, en 1996 el Heinz Award y en el mismo año el National Humanities Medal. En 2006 recibió el Stellfox Award, otorgado por Dickinson College, donde se edita esta revista.
Rita Dove served as Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995 and as Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. She has received numerous literary and academic honors, among them the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and, more recently, the 2003 Emily Couric Leadership Award, the 2001 Duke Ellington Lifetime Achievement Award, the 1996 Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities and the 1996 National Humanities Medal. In 2006 she received the Stellfox Award, given by Dickinson College, where this journal is edited.
