First Fog of Another Fall

I need the fog to lift so I canfind the garden and dead-head the daisies.

I need the fog to lift so I candrive to the post office with the sympathy card.

I need the fog to lift or at least driftfurther east so morning can rise above.

I need the fog to drift so I can drift with itand not be so earthbound, so grave.

I need to lift and drift right out of thislow, damp place, but, failing, settle

for any metaphoric ray to piercethe metaphoric fog. [End Page 176]

[End Page 177]

Ill

It's hard to swallow the daywhen morning is a pieceof dry toastand the sky is curdled, souras last night'sdisputatious dreams.

Coming down with somethingthat may or may not beall in your head.

Take more time than you needto read the label's warning.Drowsiness is relative, as isthe heaviness of machinery.

Activities that require beingalert seem remote wheneverything you do of lateis carried out by rote. [End Page 178]
