Abstract
Irving Louis Horowitz’s article is based on a dinner address delivered before the 1979 annual meeting of the Association of American University Presses in Salt Lake City, Utah, on the general theme of 'The Environment of Scholarly Publishing.' The article contains a preface written by the author in 2007.
