Abstract

Most visions of the future of academic libraries are based on the cornucopian model, that economic growth and technical innovation will continue unabated. An assessment of the future based on the ecological model, taking into account oil depletion, reveals that economic contraction and the abandonment of unsupportable technologies is the more likely scenario. The role of academic libraries may change drastically in the coming decades.
