  • The Fire Arts of Burning Man
  • Christine (a.k.a. LadyBee) Kristen and Louis M. Brill

Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. The event is held each year during the week prior to Labor Day weekend in the Black Rock desert, 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada, and is organized through the creation of a community known as Black Rock City, which in the year 2006 was home to 40,000 attendees.

A critical component of Burning Man is the contribution and installation of an amazing variety of art expressed in conventional and exotic media. The Fire Arts of Burning Man special section is a sequel to a previously published Leonardo special section (The Art of Burning Man, Vol. 36, No. 5, 2003). As the name of the event implies, fire has come to be an important art medium at Burning Man, as expressed in a variety of sculptural forms presented by participating fire artists over the years.

A Special Thank You

Burning Man appreciates all the contributors over the years who have made this art form as hot as it is. We applaud those artists who have brought and burned their Fire Art as a monument to the spirit, rather than the form, of their art.

A special salute to Crimson Rose, who appears as the Naked Fire Goddess bringing forth fire from the sun to ignite The Man in spirit and form. And another salute to Dave X and $teve Raspa for creating a safe and entertaining performance space to advance the expressive use of fire as an art medium. [End Page 320]
