Metamorphoses Winners

Musiques et Recherches in Belgium have announced the results of their fourth competition of acousmatic composition, Metamorphoses. The first prize winners of Category B are João Pedro Oliveira for Et Ignis Involvens, and Daniel Barreiro for Maresia. The audience prize was awarded to Raul Minsburg for A Tu Memoria. Other finalists include Suk Jun Kim for Kotmun, a Gate of Flowers; Yu-Chung Tseng for The Inner Voice of Triangle; and Adi Itop for [./me slowness].

The Category A first prize winner was Adam Stansbie for Early Morning, and the second prize was awarded to Junya Oikawa for Eclipse.

Also announced were the results of the spatialized interpretation competition, Space of Sound. The second prize for the Space of Sound competition went to Laurent Delforge of Belgium. There was no first prize awarded.

Prize-winners were presented at the 13th acousmatic festival, L'Espace du Son in Burssels, 19–22 October 2006. Also included at the festival were dedicated evening performances of music by Jonty Harrison, Francis Dhomont, and Philippe Mion.

Musica Nova Winners

The Society for Electroacoustic Music of the Czech Republic has announced the winners of their annual international electroacoustic music competition, Musica Nova. Over 103 compositions from 29 countries were considered by a jury consisting of Rainer Bürck, Lenka Dohnalová, Juraj Ďuriš, Pavel Kopecký, Michal Košut, Rudolf Růžička, and Milan Slavický.

For Category A (compositions of autonomous art electroacoustic music), the first prize was awarded to Hans Tutschku for Rojo. Honorary mentions were given to Thierry Gauthier for Étude aux Clavecin et Oiseaux, and Peter Mcilwain for Instrument Landscape. Finalists included Mathew Adkins for Silent Red, Antonio Ferreira for Wind Speaks to Stone, Erdem Helvacioglu for Lead Crystal Marbles, and Benjamin Thigpen for Incandescence.

For Category B (compositions for acoustic instrument/voice/ensemble and electroacoustic media), the first prize went to Henry Vega for Idoru in Metals. An honorary mention went to João Pedro Oliveira for Maelst. Finalists included Diana Blom and Emma Stacker for Gong Agong, Roderic de Man for Roentgen Connected, and Apostolos Loufopoulos and Myrto Korkokiou for Paremvoles.

Computing Music IV

Computing Music IV was held in Cologne, Germany 3–5 November 2006. The conference included the installation AMALUDUS by Clarence Barlow; an evening of computer music classics and new releases by Jean-Baptiste Barrière, Lejaren Hiller, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Michael Obst, Stephen Pope, James Tenney, Iannis Xenakis, and others; and two concerts of computer music for the Flanders-based LOGOS Foundation's music machines.

Gaudeamus Live Electronics Festival

The Gaudeamus Contemporary Music Center hosted their Live Electronics Festival 20–24 November 2006 in Amsterdam. Featured artists included the percussion and computer meta-instrument ensemble Electronic Hammer and experimental musician Francisco López. The POW ensemble reconstructed several pieces dating from the 1960s and 1970s. The American composer Gordon Mumma was present as a special guest to participate in several performances (see Figure 1).

Spark 2007

The Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art was held 20–25 February 2007 at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Douglas Geers directed the festival, now in its fifth year. Special guests for the 2007 event were Morton Subotnick and Richard Devine. Special events included Bob Dylan–themed installations, and a headphone festival curated by Viv Corringham and Scott Stulen. The festival included 15 concerts, 5 paper sessions, 4 featured lectures, and the Spark Nightlife events of curated club music works.

Pushing the Medium

Pushing the Medium #3, a forum for sound, music, and image experimentation, was held 13–22 October 2006 at locations in Topolo, Trieste, and Udine, Italy. The forum included [End Page 6] laboratory sessions, concerts, and conferences on the theme of "sound as a means of expression in relation with space and with physical experience." (See Figure 2.)
