Abstract

This article examines an unpublished film script for The Wings of the Dove, written by Robert Stevenson and commissioned by David O. Selznick in 1949. The article discusses how James's text was deliberately reshaped as a vehicle for one of Selznick's contract actresses–Ingrid Bergman, Jennifer Jones–and subsequently discusses how Stevenson incorporated elements commonly found in women's films of the '40s. It will also show how the novel is rewritten so that the main focus of attention centers on the romantic triangle of Milly, Kate and Densher–a characteristic convention of many women's films of the period.
