A dowser, she was. Thirsty,we went, or drank from brackish cisterns, for want of her.
Would squat on her haunches, spiton her hands, rub them together and spread them on the air; and indicate a place, no different, to my eye, than any other, and say, There.
Pete Wolf Smith's poems, short fiction, and non-fiction have appeared in numerous magazines, most recently in Kerem/Living Text, Jews, Twelve, Peace Review, and The New York Review of Science Fiction. He was a winner of the 2002 Lyric Recovery Poetry contest for his poem, "Lentils," and of the 1998 Anna Davidson Rosenberg Poetry Award for his poem "1944." He was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize for his poem "Zum and Jesse," which appeared in Maverick Press/Terrapin. He currently studies midrashic writing with Alicia Ostriker.
