Beginning with this issue of Jewish Social Studies , Derek Penslar will be one of its editors. Penslar, Zacks Professor of Jewish History at the University of Toronto, is an exceptionally versatile historian who has written original, important books on the origins of Zionism, on the State of Israel, and on European Jewish identity and economics. Currently, he is at work on a study of Jews in the military. In his scholarship, he cuts across the boundaries of social, economic, and cultural history. He writes with lucidity and great learning, and what he has produced is a body of scholarship that is consistently sound and also truly daring. Since the launching of the new series of JSS , he has been an active member of our Editorial Board, and we are very pleased that he has agreed to join us as an editor.
