Abstract
The recently published report of the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, convened by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, is a significant policy statement that can affect all colleges and universities and their libraries. The report does not appear to include any comprehensive analysis of available data, however. This article draws from data to question the findings and recommendations of the commission and to suggest policy alternatives.
