The TSHA Press is pleased to announce that Pigskin Pulpit: A Social History of Texas High School Football Coaches by Ty Cashion is now available in paperback. The TSHA originally published Pigskin Pulpit in 1998. The book opened the Texas high school coaching profession to historical scrutiny for the first time, examining the men who shaped the game—and generations of players—in their own image. Tracing side-by-side the development of the game and the coaching profession from its beginnings to today, Cashion explains how this schoolboy avocation wove itself so tightly into the fabric of Texas culture.
The Association's 111th Annual Meeting will take place March 8–10, 2007, at the Crowne Plaza Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio. We have on schedule 48 sessions on topics including: "Cross-National Intrigue in the Texas Republic," "The Deaths and Later Lives of Texas Ghost Towns," "Latino-based Museum Exhibits in Texas Universities," "Business in the Borderlands," "The Texas Supreme Court in the Post War Era," "Women on the Cattle Trails," "The Latest Word on the Yellow Rose of Texas," and many more, covering as usual all facets of Texas history. Some other featured events at this year's meeting are: a reception on Thursday evening at the Witte Museum, where the exhibit "A Wild and Vivid Land: Stories of South Texas" will be on view; a talk by Red McCombs ("Tell Me More about Texas") at the Book Lovers & Texana Collectors Breakfast on Friday morning; the Women and Texas History Luncheon on Friday with Elizabeth Crook as the speaker and the announcement of new Fellows; a river-barge float on the San Antonio River; and various receptions and banquets. As in years past we will have a number of joint sessions with other historical organizations, including the Texas Catholic Historical Society, the Texas Oral History Association, the Texas State Historical Commission, the Texas Baptist Historical Society, Texas Archeological Society, and Texas Parks &Wildlife. Also on the schedule are our Handbook of Texas workshop, our Quarterly and publications workshop, and our various committee meetings. The Webb Society Annual Meeting will take place on Friday, with chapter reports and the presentation of four papers.
Our traditional silent auction of Texana will include the usual fare of rare books, maps, and artifacts, and more recent publications will be on sale and for perusal in the Book Exhibits room throughout the meeting.
We would like to thank the members of the 2007 Program Committee for their hard work in putting together such a wide-ranging and diverse collection of sessions. The committee was chaired by Ty Cashion and made up of the following members: Light T. Cummins, Karen T.
