My beloved option is "REPEAT," the same song all afternoon. I don't know why anyone who can play piano would ever want sex or to get in a car and go stand in line for milk. Let others do dishes, those who can only hum, who know chopsticks, who plunck awhile around middle C before giving up and climbing in and licking the strings. The same song all afternoon, until even the sunlight goes up and up at the end, and I feel my body inside the body making these sounds, and taste why so many musicians are junkies, and why not me, Lord, why not me?

Bob Hicok’s fifth book, This Clumsy Living, will be published in the spring of 2007 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. He recently won American Poetry Review’s Jerome J. Shestack Prize and the Anne Halley Prize from Massachusetts Review.
