Abstract

According to Cheryl Ware, the author of Flea Circus Summer, Catty-Cornered, and Venola in Love, what makes books successful with children isn't so different from what makes them successful with adults: humor, attention to detail, and compelling characters. This article focuses on Ware's writing process. She draws inspiration from places as varied as scrapbooks, journals, estate sales, and her own family. The article also discusses how Ware broke into print. Why she loves writing for children, and how she was affected when Flea Circus Summer (then known as Sea Monkey Summer) was pulled from store shelves.
