Reward Systems and NSF University Research Centers: The Impact of Tenure on University Scientists' Valuation of Applied and Commercially Relevant Research

Science policy encourages the establishment of university research centers. The academic reward system continues to emphasize publications over technology transfer. Using data from center scientists, we find that having tenure negatively affects junior scientists' valuation of applied and commercial research. We discuss what this means for policy and future research.
