We are pleased to publish a special Debate section on research ethics, featuring Ted Palys and John Lowman's strong defence in favour of protecting research confidentiality by the creation of a research-participant shield law, in the vein of existing American legislation. Florence Piron responds and discusses several dimensions of their position in an equally uncompromising manner. We granted the first authors a right to respond to Piron's critique, and are content to let our readers judge the merits of both sides of this discussion. We invite you to participate in this debate and send us your reactions, which will be published in an upcoming issue.

Dans cette section Débat, consacrée à l'éthique de la recherche, nous publions d'abord un article de Ted Palys et John Lowman qui défendent avec conviction leur position en faveur de la création, à l'instar de la situation américaine, d'un 'bouclier' législatif qui protègerait la confidentialité des informations que des sujets de recherche peuvent confier aux chercheurs. La réponse de Florence Piron, qui critique la position de Palys et Lowman sur plusieurs plans, n'est pas moins tranchée. Nous avons accordé aux premiers auteurs un droit de réponse et laissons nos lecteurs juger du contenu de cette 'réponse à la réponse'.
