Abstract

Several references to the Boethius family appear in the little-known Chronicon of Victor of Tonnena and in the Registrum of Pope Gregory the Great, who refers to this Victor, I suggest, in three of his letters. From a discussion of these two sources, a new stemma appears which shows some interesting new members and some close and generally unknown links with Pope Gregory himself. The background of the heretical bishops and corrupt emperors covers the years 454 to 600, ending on a higher note with Pope Gregory and his close friend, the pious Emperor Maurice. As godfather to his eldest son and crowned heir, Theodosius, Gregory had become a member of that royal family.
