Editorial/Éditorial

The end of another publication year has arrived, and we would like to take this opportunity to recognize the enormous contribution our manuscript reviewers make to the success of CMLR (please see the listing of names on page 655). Thank you to all who have shared their expertise by carefully reading manuscripts and providing feedback to the authors. We continue to be impressed by the superb assessments that our reviewers provide. CMLR would not be able to publish high-quality research articles without this support.

This issue begins with our annual exchange article from the Modern Language Journal. Each year CMLR reprints an article from the previous year's issues of the MLJ, and the MLJ reprints one of CMLR's articles. We thank Daphnée Simard, John Erskine, Heather Lotherington, and Nicole Thibault, from the CMLR Board of Directors, for their help in making this year's choice. [End Page 505] 'Testing the Development of French Word Knowledge by Advanced Dutch- and English-Speaking Learners and Native Speakers,' by Greidanus, Beks, and Wakely (MLJ 89:2, pp. 221-233), a study of the quality of word knowledge among advanced FSL learners, was judged to be most relevant to our CMLR readership. MLJ will reprint Hossein Nassaji's article from CMLR 61:1, 'The Relationship between Depth of Vocabulary Knowledge and L2 Learners' Lexical Inferencing Strategy Use and Success,' in its Summer 2006 issue (vol. 90, no. 2).

Besides the exchange article, we offer four other interesting articles: two research studies and two 'Focus on the Classroom' pieces. Marc Lafontaine presents the results of a study investigating the strategy use of Québec ESL students at three different levels of language ability. The following article, by Hetty Roessingh, also focuses on ESL, examining the effectiveness of ESL programs, the perceptions of parents and students in these programs, and the potential for improved communication between parents and teachers. The next two articles focus more specifically on the classroom. Miles Turnbull emphasizes the [End Page 506] importance of using French in FSL classrooms and reflects on the potential role of L1 use in classroom learning. Finally, Elizabeth Knutson discusses and presents activities for developing cross-cultural awareness through an exploration of notions of cultural identity and attitudes toward the cultures of others. We hope that you will find these articles useful for your teaching.

Finally, we want to draw your attention to two Calls for Papers in this issue. First, we invite submissions for the Annual Award for the Best Paper by a Graduate Student. The competition is open to students who are currently registered or who graduated in the previous academic year. Papers should be submitted no later than September 2, 2006. Please see the ad on page 508 for details. Second, we are calling for papers for our 2007 special issue: Assessment in Language Teaching: Performance and Policies. Alister Cumming and Michel Laurier are the guest editors; they will be accepting submissions until December 20, 2006. Please see the ad on page 654 for more details.
