Three performance genres of Bangladesh-wāz mahfil, mādār pīrer gān, and jārīgān- demonstrate the fascinating and poignant interplay of hegemony, resistance, and cultures of silence in the indigenous theatre. These theatrical forms are mobilized for dual purposes: as acts of opposition for the subaltern class, and as tools of power for socially dominant groups.
