Albert J. von Frank is professor of English at Washington State University. His most recent book is The Trials of Anthony Burns: Freedom and Slavery in Emerson’s Boston (Harvard University Press, 1998).

Manisha Sinha is associate professor of African American studies and history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the author of The Counterrevolution of Slavery: Politics and Ideology in Antebellum South Carolina (University of North Carolina Press, 2000) and is currently working on a book on African Americans and the abolition movement.
