The tattered sun lights up your room
for Pearse Hutchinson
The seep of summer light fl ames a pale pink hankie—silk triangle on the green bedcover;Glows rich brown the boatin the poster I gave you,Milan in snow the old canal.
The stripes of the Catalan fl ag, red and yellow,bright-vivid, you say, at ten in the July morning.Beside it, Bosch (each panel lit by grow of day) A harvest from the Seven Deadly Sins,Tarnished thumb tacks against faded cream. And opposite you, looking out and in, Yehuda Pen's fastidious watchmaker, glinting doppelganger, eyes alert over his Yiddish newspaper, hand poised with elegant cigarette,(your hand poised to eat a morsel, raise a glass towards the map of Galicia, Verín, Viana, Valdeorras.)
Today you sit and watch the long day grow, (dust-shadows go and come)In this room, the curtains drawn over against the too-hot glare,But through curtain-crack the seep of sun Makes perfect geometry.
(The way an old man looks at a room is not the way a young man looks)But we have seen all this together— the tatter is enough to let light in.
