The Hawaiian Language Legacy Program (Papahana Ho'oilina 'Ōlelo Hawai'i) was created to preserve, publish, and disseminate 19th and 20th century Hawaiian language materials (collectively called here the "Legacy Materials") for the teaching and revitalization of the Hawaiian language and culture.

Four columns appear for each piece. The first column presents a copy of the original words of the Legacy piece. The second column presents contemporary standardized orthography (modern spelling), and generally will correct misspellings from the first column. Names of people and places are spelled in column two as they are in column one with the exception of names that have another widely known modern spelling. The third column provides an English translation that may be an edited reprinting from another source. The fourth column, unless otherwise specified, provides textual notes.

Each of the sections of this third volume was worked on by a language specialist. The specialist's work was then copyedited by two copyeditors, edited or reviewed by the editorial board, and ultimately edited by myself. Changes were made at each of...
