Biography and Science Fiction

Call for Papers. The Winter 2007 issue of Biography will be a special issue on the relation between science fiction and the theory and practice of life writing. Guest editor John Rieder invites essays on the ways science fiction explores the recording of lives, including its estrangement and problematization of the construction of identities, issues of memory and identity, the integrity or fragmentation of personal identity, the social construction of personhood, and related topics; or papers that explore the auto/biographical elements of science fiction, such as the relation of science fiction to travel writing, captivity narratives, autobiographical ethnographic accounts, or case histories. These lists of topics are meant to be suggestive, not exclusive. In general the special issue will seek to ask how comparison between biography and science fiction can provoke useful theoretical and critical questions about both genres, and any work that undertakes this task is welcome for consideration. "Lytton Strachey found biography epic and left it drama," writes George Simson, founding editor of Biography and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Hawai'i at Mänoa, in the introduction to his new edition of A Son of Heaven: A Tragic Melodrama. Though performed for short runs in London in 1925 and 1949, and on BBC radio in 1950 and 1951, this is the first printed, publically accessible edition of Strachey's only performed play. A Bloomsbury Heritage monograph published this summer by Cecil Woolf, the work contains, in addition to Professor Simson's introduction and notes, the full text of the play, including Strachey's own crossouts and modifications.
