Passing the Torch

With the publication of this issue we will have edited five volumes of the Journal of the History of Sexuality. While we are grateful for this truly rewarding experience, it is time for both of us to take on other responsibilities. Fortunately, we are able to leave JHS in very capable hands. Lesley A. Hall (Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine) and Julian Carter (Draper Program, New York University) will be Guest Editors for a double issue of volume 14, which comprises articles on "Studying the History of Sexuality: Theory, Methods, Praxis." Then, with the publication of volume 14, number 3 (July 2005), Mathew Kuefler (Department of History, San Diego State University) will assume the position of Editor.

Editing JHS has been a collective endeavor, and we are indebted to many individuals for their assistance: John Fout, who founded and edited the first eight volumes of JHS and set the high standards that we have tried to uphold; the Associate Editors listed in each issue, who have advised us on numerous matters, including the merits of many of the manuscripts submitted; our Guest Editors (Daniel Boyarin and Elizabeth A. Castelli, Dagmar Herzog, and Richard Cleminson), who introduced JHS's readers to a wealth of new scholarship; and Terence Kissack and April Haynes, who did much, much more than "manage" the Editorial Office.

We appreciate the financial support and encouragement provided by many of our colleagues at San Francisco State University, especially President Robert A. Corrigan, Provost John Gemello, Dean Joel Kassiola, Gilbert Herdt (Director, Human Sexuality Studies), and Richard J. Hoffman (Chair, Department of History). We are grateful, too, for the professionalism and the patience of the staff at the University of Texas Press, especially Sue Hausmann and Karen Crowther. Finally, we'd like to thank scholars from throughout the world who have submitted their work for publication in JHS, or evaluated others' work, or written reviews of scholarly books. Without all of these individuals these volumes would never have appeared. [End Page iv]
