In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • A Note from the Editor
  • Gordon Hutner

In October of 2004, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Arts and Sciences, along with the English Department, honored the retirement of one of its most distinguished professors, Nina Baym. Baym's career-long engagement with American writing was the focus of a day of talks centered on her illustrious scholarship on and criticism of the American Renaissance, women writers, and the writing of American literary history. The essays in this issue are drawn from those proceedings, though more might also have been included if space permitted.
