The Dance

you couldn't but help seeing through the window,
see what no one wanted to know:
a son, a mother crippled
to give him profession;
a daughter, a father spread the thighs of,
pressed in hard until she liked it, begged for more;
and the others come to look in at you, yes you
behind the glass.
Looking and circling
the center,
dancing, city dancers, rounding a hat,
hat dancing it.
Distorting it, slowing to it.
Dancing, tapping down,
concealing the scar, the smear, denying the design,
neglecting the pulse of passing,
giving into desire, rising at the glimpse
of that something beyond skin and reach,
a breach of self, a throb into future flesh.
Melodies de soledades, night-heavy
with the green of new fruit, pulsed, icebound,
and glazed, until you had to turn, deny your own hand,
pull down the blind against the cold.

No pudiste evitar ver por la ventana,
ver lo que nadie quería saber:
un hijo, una madre postrada
para darle futuro;
una hija, un padre que abre sus muslos,
que empujó hasta que a ella le gustó, y pidió más;
los demás vienen a verlo, a verte, sí a ti,
tras el cristal.
Mirando, rodeando
el centro,
bailando, bailarines de ciudad,
alrededor de un sombrero, bailándolo.
Distorsionándolo, reteniéndolo,
bailando, taconeando,
cubriendo la cicatriz, la mancha, negando la señal,
olvidando el paso del tiempo,
cediendo al deseo, elevándose por la visión
fugaz de algo más allá de la piel, inalcanzable,
una brecha en el ser, un latido hacia la carne futura.
Melodias de soledades, pesada noche
como la fruta, aún verde, latiéndo, trampa
de hielo, glaseado, hasta tener que volverte, negar tu mano,
y bajar la persiana contra el frío.
