Since the tendency of the masonry is to fold from within, there were designs put in place, like metaphor, for building the dome, its herringbone pattern of brickwork leveled the circular skeleton rounding the frame in nine diminishing rings all raising skyward, an echo from the flamed circles of Dante's Inferno born somewhere below the sprawl of Florence. I see you in this same way, before the dome rose, when there was always a fear of one raised so high on scaffolding, even their looking down into the chasm would prompt them to lean inward.
