Michael A. Ross is associate professor of history at Loyola University New Orleans. He is the author of Justice of Shattered Dreams: Samuel Freeman Miller and the Supreme Court during the Civil War Era (2003).

Joan Waugh is associate professor of history at the University of California at Los Angeles. She wrote Unsentimental Reformer: The Life of Josephine Shaw Lowell (1998) and is co-editor of and author in The Memory of the Civil War in American Culture (2004). Her current project is a book on Ulysses S. Grant.

Andre M. Fleche is a doctoral candidate in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virgina. He is currently completing a dissertation examining the impact of the legacy of the European Revolutions of 1848 on the American Civil War.

W. Scott Poole is an assistant professor of history at the College of Charleston and the author of Never Surrender: Confederate Memory and Conservatism in the South Carolina Upcountry (2004). He is currently completing a manuscript on the history of the 1st South Carolina of African Descent.
