Judith R. Baskin, Knight Professor of Humanities and Director of the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at the University of Oregon, is the author of Midrashic Women: Formations of the Feminine in Rabbinic Literature.
Jill Hammer is a senior associate at Ma'yan: The Jewish Women's Project of the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, and is also the founder of www.telshemesh.org, a website celebrating and creating earth-based traditions within Judaism. She is a poet and author whose work has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, such as Lilith, Bridges, and The Women's Torah Commentary, and she lectures and teaches on modern midrash and creative ritual. Her book is entitled Sisters at Sinai: New Tales of Biblical Women (Jewish Publication Society, 2001). She was ordained as a rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2001 and holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Connecticut.
Lori Lefkovitz is the Gottesman Professor of Gender and Judaism at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and the founding director of Kolot: The Center for Jewish Women's and Gender Studies.
Yael Levine holds a Ph.D. from the Talmud Department of Bar-Ilan University. She is engaged in independent research and has published numerous articles in scholarly journals, focusing on issues related to women and Judaism. Apart from her liturgical compositions, she is the author of the seder companion Midreshei Bitya bat Par'oh (Jerusalem, 2004).
Judith Margolis, MFA, an Israel-based American artist, is the Art Editor of Nashim and a regular contributor to the journal. Her artist's books are included in the Women of the Book traveling exhibit, and her collage/paintings are part of the exhibit "Passion and Passover: Artists of Faith Celebrate their Holy Days," at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Pamela S. Nadell is Professor of History and Director of the Jewish Studies Program at American University. Her most recent book is American Jewish Women's History: A Reader (New York University Press, 2003).
Vanessa L. Ochs is the Ida and Nathan Kolodiz Director of Jewish Studies and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Sarah Laughed (McGraw-Hill, 2004) and Words on Fire: [End Page 210] One Woman's Journey into the Sacred (Harcourt Brace Jovanovic, 1990). She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Creative Writing.
Judith Plaskow is Professor of Religious Studies at Manhattan College. A former President of the American Academy of Religion, she is author of Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective. Her book, The Coming of Lilith: Essays on Feminism, Judaism, and Sexual Ethics 1972–2003 will be published by Beacon Press in July 2005.
George Savran teaches biblical studies at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. His book Encountering the Divine will be published shortly by Continuum Books.
Rona Shapiro is a rabbi and a senior associate at Ma'yan: The Jewish Women's Project of the JCC in Manhattan.
Chava Weissler is Philip and Muriel Berman Professor of Jewish Civilization and Professor of Religion Studies at Lehigh University. Her book, Voices of the Matriarchs (Boston: Beacon Press, 1998), inquires into the religious lives of Central and Eastern European Jewish women, as expressed in their Yiddish prayers (tkhines). She is currently studying issues of gender and spirituality in the so-called "Jewish Renewal" movement in North America.
Wendy Zierler received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University, was a recipient of Fulbright and Whiting grants, and has taught at Princeton and the University of Hong Kong, where she served as a Research Fellow in the Department of English.
