El encuentro

     Te descubrí en la penumbra cuando se
alzaron las copas. Sentí un escalofrío y bebí
el amargo líquido aceptando tu juego. Desde
entonces, a través de aquel jardín, paseas
por mis venas. Después he llegado, has
llegado, ha llegado consumiendo mi visión,
consumando su imagen. Me dices, nos dijimos:
hace años que busco una certeza, pero el mar
me impide, te impide, concentrarnos. Los
cuerpos flotan y se acumulan junto al muro.
Labios indecisos, manos arañadas, y había
tanta espuma que era imposible huir.
     Pero un día las aguas volverán a su
cauce . . .
     Mientras tanto no huyas: vigila y aguarda
en la penumbra
     lo postergado.

The rendezvous

     I discovered you in the shadow
when they raised their glasses. I felt a shiver and drank
the bitter liquid, accepting your game. Since
then, through that garden, you amble through my
veins. Afterwards I have arrived, you have arrived,
it has arrived consuming my vision,
consummating its image. You tell me, we told each other:
I have been looking for a certainty for years, but
the sea keeps me from, keeps you from, concentrating. The
bodies float and pile up by the wall.
Indecisive lips, scratched hands, and there was
so much foam it was impossible to flee.
     But one day the stream will return to its
bed . . .
     In the meantime don't run away; stay and
watch in the shadow
     what has been postponed.
