Call for Papers: For a special issue of Research on African Literatures on "The Question of Nationalism." The creation of independent nations in Africa has led to the development of new national and quasi-national literatures. At the same time as this process has proceeded in the past forty years (this is the fortieth year since the independence of the first sub-Saharan African state, Ghana), recent historical developments have led to the emphasis on "globalization," a process that appears to supersede the formation of national identities or borders. From a feminist perspective, much that has gone into the creation of a nationalist ideology has been problematic: we see this in terms of women's social roles, their representation in the media and literature, and their subordinated place in the emergence of new patriarchal structures or the revalidation of old ones. Nations, national identities, nationalist sentiments are often naturalized, taken for granted, and integrated into ruling ideologies. In short, the question of nationalism for African literature and cinema today is a vexed one. This special issue will deal with any significant dimension of this topic. Deadline: 31 July 1999.
