Gordon McKinney is professor of history and director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College. He is the author of Zeb Vance: North Carolina’s Civil War Governor and Gilded Age Political Leader (2004) and, with John Inscoe, The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: Western North Carolina in the Civil War (2000).
Edward John Harcourt, an assistant registrar at the University of Warwick (U.K.), is completing a doctorate in American history at Vanderbilt University. A previous article, “The Whipping of Richard Moore: Reading Emotion in Reconstruction America,” appeared in The Journal of Social History (Dec. 2002).
Jeffrey E. Vogel teaches advanced placement United States history and world history at a high school in the Boston area.
