About the Contributors

Adrian Blevins teaches at Roanoake College in Salem, Virginia. She is a recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writers' Foundation award for poetry and author of The Man Who Went Out for Cigarettes and The Brass Girl Brouhaha.
Andrew Doyle is assistant professor of history at Winthrop University. He has published several articles on southern college football and is currently completing a cultural history of southern college football between its inception in the late 1880s and World War I.
Marcie Cohen Ferris is visiting professor in American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ferris has worked in the field of museums and public history for over twenty years, including the Institute for Southern Jewish Life in Utica, Mississippi, and the Weaving Women's Words Oral History Project of the Jewish Women's Archive in Brookline, Massachusetts. Her book on southern and Jewish food traditions will be published by UNC Press in 2005.
Nancy Scheper-Hughes is professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, where she directs the doctoral program in Critical Studies in Medicine, Science, and the Body. She has researched, written about, and been politically involved in topics ranging from AIDS and human rights in Cuba to the repatriation of the brain of the famous Yahi Indian Ishi from the Smithsonian Institution to the Pit River people of northern California. Her most recent research is a multi-sited ethnographic study of the global traffic in human organs.
Lee Zacharias is author of a book of short stories, Helping Muriel Make It Through the Night, and the novel Lessons. Her nonfiction has appeared in numerous journals and has been cited in both The Best American Essays and the Pushcart Prize anthologies. She is professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where for a decade she edited The Greensboro Review.
