The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama, by Melvyn C. Goldstein (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1997), 145 pp.
Professor Goldstein, author of more than eighty articles and books on Tibet, and director of Case Western Reserve University’s Center for Research on Tibet, has written a compact, illuminating history of the political status of Tibet dating from the seventh century A.D. down to the current struggles that have captured considerable attention in the human rights community. This volume is an excellent starting point for those desiring to better understand the history behind the current headlines.
