Postscript to the Review of The Development of Economics in Western Europe

In my review of The Development of Economics in Western Europe since 1945, edited by A. W. Bob Coats, that appeared in the fall 2001 issue of HOPE, the paper on Italy is said to show “how the Fascist legacy left its imprint on Italian economics.” Its author, Pier Luigi Porta, has drawn my attention to the possibility that this sentence, if taken out of context, may be misinterpreted. It is evident that the very next sentence eliminates any shadow of ambiguity by saying that “how to overcome the corporatist legacy was also the problem in Portugal.” Nevertheless, my wording apparently placed too much of a burden on the context, which I regret.
